Student Diversity Affairs Committee (SDAC)

SDAC is a student run organization devoted to bringing to light issues of diversity for students, faculty, and staff in the College of Education. SDAC works to plan and organize educational opportunities to spread awareness to students, faculty, and staff of ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds, international students, veterans, non-traditional students, students with disabilities, and the LGBTQ population among others. SDAC strives to promote the strengths within our diverse student body among programs in the College of Education and in the community.

Mission Statement:

The SDAC works to collaboratively engage faculty and students to address diversity in the COE. We strive to promote understanding of cultural diversity and its implications in education and practice.

Rod is a doctoral student in the School Psychology Program in the College of Education. He has a master's degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Education, and a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Spanish from the UW Madison's College of Letters and Sciences.  He is a graduate of the WI Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilties (LEND) program and worked at UW-Madison's Waisman Center conducting research related to Rod is interested in the equitable access to services and resources for parents and families of at-risk youth, with special consideration for culturally and linguistically diverse families and for individuals with disabilities.  

As the SDAC GE, Rod supports diversity groups and initiatives in the COE, and works with the SDAC to plan diversity-related events. Stop by his office in HEDCO 141, or contact him to share ideas on diversity initiatives or events, or to say hello and share experiences in the COE.

The UO College of Education Diversity Coordinator is a liaison for students, faculty, and community educators who are committed to the cultural competence of our graduates.

The COE Diversity Coordinator:

  • Supports COE diversity initiatives through faculty/staff trainings and an evaluation system to monitor COE’s progress in achieving goals related to diversity issues
  • Helps COE students articulate diversity issues as they experience them in the college or in field placements
  • Facilitates the COE Community Advisory Committee
  • Assists in the "internationalizing" of the college through identifying opportunities for international collaborative research and faculty exchanges with colleges world-wide.
