Student Instructions
College of Education Commencement Ceremony

Monday, June 18, 2018, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Matthew Knight Arena

Don't forget to RSVP to the COE Ceremony by May 11th, 2018.  Students who RSVP after that will still be able to walk in the ceremony, but their names may not be in the ceremony program.

  • Please arrive between 3 and 3:30 pm and check in at the registration table inside the West entrance to the arena (the doors that are at the plaza behind the Ford Alumni Center on the Agate St. facing side of the building).  Due to commencement activities road closures parking will be extremely difficult on campus.  Please utilize the shuttle from Autzen Stadium.
  • Students will go in the West entrance (behind the Ford Alumni Center) to check in.  Families will go in the North doors--the doors on the Franklin Blvd. side of the arena.  The doors won't open for us until the Business School ceremony is done at around 3 pm.  It's open seating and no tickets are needed.
  • Check in at the appropriate Undergraduate or Graduate table and pick up your photo card. Then you will be directed to the arena lower level where there will be a designated section (with a sign) for your major/program.  If you want to sit with someone your best chance is to make sure you are in front of or behind them.
  • Doctoral students will need to go to the MacArthur Club on the lower level.  There will be a sign and staff to direct you.
  • Walk up the center aisle. The people walking on the left side will sit in the left section (LINE 1) and the people walking on the right side will sit on the right section (LINE 2). There will be a staff member at the end of the aisle to guide you.
  • Move directly to your seat and remain standing until the Dean tells you to be seated.
  • You will be released by row to go up to the stage.  When you cross the stage, hand your name card to the reader, shake the Dean’s hand, have your picture taken and return to your seat.  The Dean will indicate when to move your tassel from right to left.

The order of events is as follows:

  • Processional and seating of faculty and students
  • The Dean begins ceremony/introduction of faculty and guests/speech
  • Introduction of undergraduate student speaker – student gives speech
  • Introduction of graduate student speaker – student gives speech
  • Doctoral Hooding
  • Recognition of graduates-everyone's name is read and everyone walks across stage
  • The Dean gives closing remarks

Recessional begins with the line guides leading the platform party first, the faculty next and then the students from back to front.  You will exit the arena at the East side of the arena (Villard St.)
