Applications for Fall 2019 enrollment will open on January 1, 2019, and will be considered on a rolling basis through May 1, 2019. We will begin reviewing applications and making offers of admission in January.

Applications to the UO Prevention Science MS Program

Complete the online Graduate Admission Application; select Counseling Psychology and Human Services: Prevention Science as your major, within the College of Education. If you have questions concerning this form or the $70 application fee, contact the Graduate School (541-346-5129). 

You do not need to complete the online application in one sitting. You will be able to log in and work on different sections of your application until your payment is made. Your application is not considered complete until all items have been received and payment has been submitted. Once you complete the information and submit payment, you can log back in to check the receipt status of your letters, transcripts, and test scores. Receipt status is manually updated every Friday after payment is submitted.

In the application, you will be asked to upload:

  • Vita/resume: detailing education, work experiences, and relevant personal information
  • Purpose statement:  describing goals and purpose in seeking admission to the program.  Please include a brief statement about your research experiences and interests related to prevention science research being conducted here at UO, and faculty you would like to work with. Recommended length: 2-3 single-spaced pages.

You also need to provide the following items:

  • Letters of Recommendation: You need to provide the email contact information for 3 sources for letters of recommendation--preferably at least one from a professor or someone able to judge the quality of your academic work, and at least one from a research supervisor. Once you enter and confirm this information, you cannot change it. An e-mail will automatically be generated and sent to your referees requesting a letter of recommendation for you. The e-mail will provide instructions on the information to provide and how to upload the recommendation letter. You will receive an automated email notifying you when each of your references uploads their letter.
  • Transcripts: You are required to send an official set of transcripts to the UO Office of Admissions. You only need to provide transcripts from institutions where a bachelor's or graduate degree has been earned (not transfer credits or AA degrees). If your school provides official electronic transcripts, they may be e-mailed to Otherwise, please mail one set of official transcripts to the following address:

     If the degree is in progress, provide the most up-to-date transcript.

  • Test scores: Have your original GRE scores sent to the program. If you take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general (not subject), have ETS send your official scores to University Code: University of Oregon (code 4846) and Department Code: Counseling Psychology (code 2005). We cannot receive your score without using the proper codes. This process may take 6 weeks. Only tests taken in the past 5 years are valid.

International Applicants

We encourage and welcome international applicants. To make sure that we can read about you and your work, please be sure to attend to the following details.

If your transcripts are not in English, the applicant is required to provide a CERTIFIED English translation of all college or university transcripts. Transcripts must reflect the equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from an institution of recognized standing.

If you did not graduate from an accredited US institution or from an institution in an English speaking country, you must obtain a passing score for one of the three following exams: iBT TOEFL (88+), IELTS (overall band score of 7.0), or TSE (50+). Please submit your official test scores to the Graduate School (University Code 4846) and e-mail a copy of your scores to the Prevention Science program,

Application Deadline

Applications that are complete will be reviewed beginning in January, until a full cohort of students has accepted offers of admission. Only completed applications will be considered. The online application must be completed and letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores, and payment must be RECEIVED in order for the application to be considered complete. 

Confirmation of Complete Application

Once your payment is submitted, GRE scores and transcripts receipt information is manually updated every Friday. Once you have paid, you can log back in and check the status of your application, including your letters of recommendation. All applicants will receive an email notification of their application results.
