Emphasis Philosophy

The Policy and Leadership emphasis focuses on building practical and theoretical knowledge and skills to support policy, leadership, assessment, and measurement. This emphasis is intended for students who wish to pursue careers in central school administration, student support services, staff and community relations, or program coordination.

Emphasis Description

The Policy and Leadership emphasis develops researchers and scholars who can apply theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and analytical skills to improve educational performance. This emphasis focuses on several dimensions of research leadership in pre-K-12 educational systems, including:

  • development of policies that guide programs
  • creation of organizational structures and functions to facilitate change
  • measurement and analysis of educational outcomes to enact accountability

This emphasis requires completion of 48 credits and two proficiencies:

  • Literature synthesis completed in EDLD 659 - Professional Writing
  • Philosophy of leadership completed in EDLD 620 - Educational Leadership
