Why did you choose the University of Oregon?

As a non-traditional student, my options had to be limited to local options. Attending the University of Oregon was a personal goal of mine since I graduated high school over 10 years ago. As a non-traditional student, I have come to really appreciate the flexibility and continuous support of all my professors in my time here.

What excites you about your chosen field of study?

I think setting a foundation that will guide me as I continue my journey to become a therapist. I want to work with young children and have enjoyed adding some formal education to my experience so I can better serve future clients.

What is your most memorable experience at the College of Education?

I have enjoyed every Family and Human Services class I have been in, thanks to the supportive instructors and the engaging classmates. I didn’t imagine really talking to classmates, but it’s been nice to make some friends along the way.

What impact do you hope to make in your future career?

If one day I can impact just one life, that is more than I could have ever hoped for. I hope to one day just be a safe space for families and that I can create change in whatever community space I am in.

Do you have any advice for prospective students?

It’s simple: go for it. Try the “weird” class. Check the clubs, check out the resources. I think leaving your comfort zone is exactly what college is for!

Cindy is a 2022-23 recipient of the Pumfrey Family Scholarship.
