"I enjoyed the possibilities you could go into through the FHS program. I loved the FHS program, as I got to know my classmates, professors and GE’s really well!" – Claire Gosslee

Hometown: Creswell, Oregon
Current job title: Counselor Associate

Why did you choose the Family and Human Services program?

I have always been interested in working with children and families. I got my associates in human services and general science from Lane Community College in 2020. I went directly into working in Title and Escrow and felt like I was at a dead end. I was encouraged to look into the Family and Human Services program at UO and I was sold. It was a great program as you learn the diversity in human Services, you can work with recovering addicts, work in Department of Human Services, or become an educator. I enjoyed the possibilities you could go into through the FHS program. I loved the FHS program, as I got to know my classmates, professors and GE’s really well!

What has your career path looked like since graduation?

I was a little nervous graduating; I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I have always wanted to work with children and looked into being a substitute teacher. However, I ended up with an amazing non-profit, Serenity Lane, as their Human Resources Coordinator. After 5 months in this position, I transitioned into a Counselor Associate. As a Counselor Associate, I have become proficient in case management, group therapy, and clinical documentation. I believe I have a lot of growth areas and am exploring to deepen my knowledge and education.

What did you learn in the program that you found most valuable in preparing for your career?

Definitely motivational interviewing and Open questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summary reflections (OARS). The group counseling skills are helpful too as I work in group counseling. I actively utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

If you had one piece of advice for current FHS undergrads, what would it be?

It is a nice smaller program, get to know your classmates! I made some really great friend and some amazing memories.
