From UOTeach to Empowering ELD Students: Alumna Adriana Alvarez’s Journey of Advocacy and Impact

“Advice I would give to my younger self starting college: Do not give up, the road is going to get a little bumpy, you are going to want to give up, you worked so hard to get this far, keep going.” – Adriana Alvarez

Meet Adriana Alvarez '21, who received a master's of science in UOTeach through our Alumni Spotlight series.

Adriana currently serves as an English Language Development (ELD) teacher at Cascade Middle School. Her career is grounded in advocacy, student empowerment, and the belief that every learner deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

Reflecting on her time at UO, Alvarez emphasized the confidence she gained through her academic experience. “My experience at UO gave me the confidence to go for what I feel is best for my students,” she stated. “It helped me be more of an advocate in supporting students who come from different backgrounds of learning.”

Alvarez’s teaching philosophy is centered on helping students recognize their own potential. “I want my students to know they are capable of anything. They each have something unique to offer, and that I’ll always be cheering for them.”

One of the most rewarding parts of Adriana’s career has been the relationships she’s built. “The connections and trust I’ve developed with my students and their families makes me proud every day,” she shares. These moments affirm her decision to become a teacher and fuel her commitment to making a lasting impact.

Adriana’s journey was shaped by a powerful network of mentors at the College of Education. Professors Tina Gutierez-Schmich, Julie Heffernan, Jerry Rosiek, and Leah and Rena Dunbar were instrumental in her growth. “From day one, they made me feel welcomed, seen, and supported,” she recalls. Their classes weren’t just academic, they were transformative. “The texts, the conversations, and the way we could bring our personal experiences into our work made a lasting impact.”

Her academic experience also reshaped her understanding of higher education. “Getting my degree shaped my perspective. It showed me anything is possible and to never give up on my goals.” Alvarez also noted that her support system played a crucial role in her success. “My circle around me had a big impact. My drive to succeed was a huge motivation.”

To current and future UOTeach students, Adriana offers this advice: “Step out of your comfort zone. Ask for help. Don’t give up, it’s all worth it."

Alvarez’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and advocacy in shaping a meaningful career in education. Looking ahead, Alvarez remains committed to her students and her mission. “My hopes for the future of my career is to always show my students how much I care for them, how they can do anything they want, and to always teach with love.”
