Congratulations to Hill Walker who was inducted into the Multi-Tiered System of Supports Hall of Fame
Professor Emeritus Hill Walker, PhD, a pioneering scholar, educator, and leader whose work has shaped the fields of special education, school mental health, and positive behavioral supports for decades, was inducted into the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Hall of Fame at the Global MTSS Summit on July 31, 2026. The honor recognizes the profound and lasting impact of his contributions to educators, schools, and students.
Walker is a Professor Emeritus of Special Education, co-director and founder of the Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior, and a Senior Research Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. Throughout his distinguished career, his research has focused on school-related behavior disorders among children and youth, with expertise spanning universal screening, early intervention, school safety, antisocial behavior in youth, social skills development, and delinquency.
Walker has authored or coauthored more than 235 publications, including 21 books, helping to advance evidence-based approaches that support student success and well-being. His work has informed generations of educators and researchers and contributed significantly to the development of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
Walker has spent his entire career at the University of Oregon. He served as director of the Center on Human Development for 26 years and as associate dean for Special Education and Rehabilitation for 14 years. Through these leadership roles, he helped strengthen the university’s reputation as a national leader in special education research and practice.
His contributions have been recognized with many prestigious honors, including the University of Oregon Presidential Medal in 2000, the Council for Exceptional Children’s National Research Award in 1993, and the National Association of School Mental Health’s Research Award in 2020.
Walker’s induction into the MTSS Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of a career dedicated to improving outcomes for children and youth.
