Learn how a COE scholarship is helping Vivian Koomson, a Prevention Science doctoral student from Ghana, make significant strides in her academic and professional journey.

“As an international student with limited resources and opportunities to work outside the university, I sometimes face shortages. The College of Education Scholarship lessens my financial burden, enabling me to focus on my academic work. This scholarship is such a relief!” – Vivian Koomson

Vivian is deeply committed to enhancing mental health, especially among young people, and has dedicated much of her work to suicide prevention. As a research assistant in the University of Oregon Suicide Prevention Lab under the guidance of Professor John Seeley, she has supported critical suicide prevention initiatives throughout Oregon. Her dedication to the cause has earned her recognition as a Life-Sustaining Practices Fellow, where she conducts research specifically on suicide prevention among Black youth in Oregon.

With over 13 years of teaching experience in Ghana, Vivian brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to her studies at the University of Oregon. She holds multiple degrees, including a master’s degree in education management from the University of Cape Coast and a master’s degree in prevention science from the University of Oregon College of Education. Additionally, she served as the Assistant Director II of Education for the Ghana Education Service.

Vivian's goal is to become a Prevention Science teacher-scholar, conducting research and implementing interventions to promote youth mental health.
