The Family and Human Services program was super awesome and helpful especially during my whole job hunting experience. Because of COVID-19, finding a post-grad job was very difficult. I found that there was a lack of open positions for the job that I was looking for which made it difficult to find one that fit best with me. The supervisors and advisors within the FHS department were so helpful when it came to navigating which job would be the best fit for me, and helping me with interviewing skills, which I didn't have a lot of. My university supervisor that I met with in a group setting once a week was amazing. She used our class time to answer questions about searching for jobs, networking, building resumes, and practicing potential interview questions.

Like my university supervisors, my supervisors at 90by30 were just as helpful and encouraging when it came to the job hunting process. Throughout having a year long internship, I was able to explore different sides and experiences of working in human services.

Everyone in the FHS department and its coordinating field sites are so encouraging and helpful. I truly could not have done it without the help from all of the wonderful supervisors I have had and I will be forever grateful for the amazing staff, students, professors, and supervisors within the FHS department which helped guide me to get where I am today.

Meet Samantha May, '16
The Family and Human Services Program and Practicum inspired my aspiration to positively impact the lives of local families. Being able to intern in agencies providing prevention and intervention services allowed me to experience different ways to have that impact without having to have a Master’s Degree.

After completing my senior internship with CAFA, I was offered a position as their Program Manager for their Domestic Violence Intervention and Parenting Programs. In this role, I am able to support individuals, couples, and parents looking to gain tools to support them in maintaining healthier relationships that are free from abuse. I utilize my skills gained from the program daily in terms of case management, motivational interviewing, and collaborating with other agencies such as the Department of Human Services, Parole & Probation, and the court system.

Understanding trauma and how it impacts the brain, body, and our relationships has been crucial to creating a safe, non-judgmental place for clients to learn, grow, and ultimately change. It has been my pleasure to support our community in this capacity.

I am grateful for the program as it opened doors for me that I had never even considered prior.
