There is no required length for the personal statement. Topics to address in your personal statement include:

There is no required length for the academic writing sample. A research paper you wrote for a previous college course is perfectly acceptable.

What is a realistic timeline for completing the program?
On average doctoral students complete their program in 6 years with a range of 5-7 years. All doctoral students are subject to a 7 year time limit.

I have limited or no teaching experience in public schools; how will this affect my chances of being admitted?
Teaching experience at the K-12 or college level is preferred but not required. The committee carefully considers each applicant’s overall qualifications.

Are any of the classes online?
There are no online classes. You will not be able to complete the program unless you live near Eugene.

What type of funding and scholarships are available for doctoral students?
In order to attract excellent students and support their development as scholars, the CSSE program historically has provided four years of fiscal support for admitted PhD students, primarily through Graduate Employee (GE) appointments.  Although we are not able to guarantee funding as it is dependent upon annual budget constraints and course scheduling, we strive to admit the number of students for whom we might offer this type of financial support. GE appointments cover full tuition plus a modest stipend during the academic year. The Graduate School also posts other fellowships and scholarships on their website.

I am an International Student, is there anything else I have to do?
Yes; please visit this page to find out more: http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/international-applicants

Applicants with a US degree (Bachelors or higher) are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. This is automatically granted upon review of their application.

How many students are in each cohort?
There are approximately 10 students in each cohort.

Does a cohort take all of the same classes at the same time?
For the first two years, yes.

Is the GRE required?
Yes. No exceptions.

Is there a minimum GRE score that is accepted?
No, the selection committee will consider the applicant as a whole. Lower GRE scores may be offset by strong experience in other areas and vice-versa. This is not to say, however, that the score is insignificant.

Who should write the letters of recommendation?
Those who can best attest to your ability to conduct university level research. At least two of your three recommendations should address your abilities in this area.
