Job Title: Special Education Teacher - Cascade Middle School

Tribal Affiliation: Confederated Tribes of Siletz

1. Why did you choose the UO College of Education for your graduate studies?

I chose the University of Oregon for multiple reasons. It was my local University and its Special Education program was ranked third in the nation at the time. I had heard about the Sapsik'ʷałá Program from my tribal Education Specialist and was hopeful that I could pursue that as an option during graduate school. I was also familiar with the University of Oregon, having previously graduated from their Education Foundations Program and was confident that I could be successful in that setting.

2. Tell us about why the Sapsik'ʷałá Program is important, from your perspective?

The Sapsik'ʷałá Program provided me a with a support network of individuals that I could relate and grow from. It allowed me to be a member of a community, in a setting where otherwise I would have felt like the other. The program allowed me to focus on my education and not stress about the monetary costs of attending graduate school. It provided me the resources to not only maintain, but better my style of living and health during graduate school.

3. What advice do you have for future American Indian/Alaska Native educators?

Being an educator is a difficult yet rewarding profession. It is easy to look at all the negatives in education and question what difference you can make. However, all it takes is making a difference in one student’s life to make it all worthwhile. In the education field it is important to build a community that you can collaborate and brainstorm with. Whether this is a group of teachers at your building or multiple online resources, it will provide you a group of individuals that you can bounce ideas off, gain an additional perspectives from, or commiserate with. The last piece of advice I have, is as a teacher it is very important that you take care of yourself. It is hard to be the teacher student’s need, when you are stressed or overwhelmed. Make sure you take time for yourself and your friends, you will need them to lean and laugh on.
