Equity Leadership Fellows Program offers unique funding opportunity

The Department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership (EMPL) is announcing a unique funding opportunity for current and future preliminary administrator licensure (PreAL), doctorate of education (DEd), and DEd/PreAL graduate students called the Equity Leadership Fellows program. The program is taking applications now for students planning to enroll during the 2016-17 academic year, with a deadline of March 15. The program is the first of its kind for the department.

EMPL will award the fellowship to qualified students who share its commitment to educational equity, inclusion, and advancing social justice. Department Head Charles Martinez says this type of student enhances the learning environment while advancing the department’s objectives in these areas.

“The need to address longstanding systemic inequities in education is among the most urgent issues in the field, and a central theme to all of EMPL’s programs,” Martinez said. “This program will support emerging equity leaders whose personal cultural backgrounds, professional experiences, and future goals will help to transform education and promote social justice.”

The basic amounts of the award for the 2016 academic year are $1,000 for students pursuing the PreAL, $1,500 for students pursuing the DEd, and $2,000 for students pursuing both the DEd and PreAL. If the student’s home district provides matching funds, the range of department awards increases from $1,500 to $3,000, and the total award amounts would double with the district’s contribution included.
