Applications for Fall 2019 cannot be started until October 15. The on-line application must be completed by 11:59 PM, Pacific Standard Time, January 7, 2019. Interviews will be Thursday, February 21, 2019.

Application to the UO CFT Program

Complete the online Graduate Admission Application; select Couples and Family Therapy as your major, within the College of Education. There is not a specialization. If you have questions concerning this form or the $70 application fee, or problems with your login, contact the Graduate School (541.346.5129). 

You do not need to complete the online application in one sitting. You will be able to log-in and work on different sections of your application until your payment is made or the application deadline passes. Your application is not considered complete until all items have been received and payment has been submitted. Once you complete the information and submit payment, you can log back in to check the receipt status of your letters, transcripts, and test scores. Receipt status is manually updated every Friday after payment is submitted

In the application you will be asked to upload:

  • Vita/resume
  • Purpose statement: 2 pages, single-spaced, describing goals and purpose in seeking admission to the program
  • Diversity essay: 1-page, single-spaced essay response to the following questions: What does diversity mean to you? What does it mean to be sensitive and responsive to diversity as a profession?

You also need to provide the following items:

  • Letters of Recommendation: You need to provide the email contact information for at least 3 sources (and no more than 5) for letters of recommendation. Once you enter and confirm this information, you cannot change it. As soon as you submit the contact information, an email will automatically be generated and sent to your referees requesting a letter of recommendation for you. The email will provide instructions on the information to include and how to upload the letter. You will receive an automated email notifying you when each of your references uploads their letter, and you may also check the status once you have paid. If you need to make a change to your referee information, send corrections to
  • Transcripts: You are required to send an official set of transcripts to the UO Office of Admissions. You only need to provide transcripts from institutions where a bachelor's or graduate degree has been earned (not transfer credits or AA degrees). If your school provides official electronic transcripts, they may be emailed to, but the UO cannot accept electronic transcripts directly from the applicant. Official paper transcripts should be mailed to the following address:

     If the degree is in progress, provide the most up-to-date transcript.

  • Test scores: Have your original GRE or MAT scores sent to the program. If you take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general (not subject), have ETS send your official scores to University Code: University of Oregon (code 4846) and Department Code: Counseling Psychology (code 2005) . If you take the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), have Pearson send your official scores to school code 4119. We cannot receive your score without using the proper codes. This process may take 6 weeks, so do not take the test any later than December 4. Only tests taken in the past 5 years are valid.

The expected minimum GRE scores are Verbal 50%, Quantitative 44%, and Written 4.0. The expected minimum MAT score is 410. For more information, see Frequently Asked Questions.

International Applicants

If your transcripts are not in English, the applicant is required to provide a CERTIFIED English translation of all college or university transcripts. Transcripts must reflect the equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from an institution of recognized standing.

If you did not graduate from an accredited US institution or from an institution in an English speaking country, you must obtain a passing score for one of the three following exams: iBT TOEFL (88+), IELTS (overall band score of 7.0), or TSE (50+). Please submit your official test scores to the Graduate School (University Code 4846) and email a copy of your scores to the CFT program,

Application Deadline

January 7 The on-line application must be completed and letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores, and payment must be RECEIVED by this date. Incomplete or late applications (those arriving after January 7) will not be reviewed for admission, no exceptions.

**Domestic candidates invited to the February 21 (Thursday) interview are expected to attend. International applicants will receive a phone interview.**

Confirmation of Complete Application

Please do not contact the program to confirm receipt of materials. Once your payment is submitted, test scores and transcripts receipt information is manually updated every Friday. Once you have paid, you can log back in and check the status of your application, including your letters of recommendation. All applicants will receive an email notification of their application results.
