The special educator endorsement and licensure program prepares special educators to work with students who have a variety of diagnostic labels (e.g., learning disabilities, autism) in elementary schools. Full-time students start summer term and complete a 59 credit add-on endorsement to an existing teaching license or a 63 credit initial teaching license in five terms. Students can combine the program with the master's degree with the addition of 9-15 required master's credits.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants must meet general university requirements for graduate admission including a bachelor's degree and 3.00 grade point average (GPA). In addition, applicants must submit a formal department application including a statement of professional goals and experience, resume, letters of recommendation, transcripts, test results from Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or Miller Analogies Test (MAT).Applicants must also submit passing scores for the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or PRAXIS I/PPST and have experience working with special populations.
Licensing Process:
Upon completion of program requirements, graduates of the Special Educator-Early Childhood/Elementary Program are eligible to apply to Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) for their initial teaching license or for an add-on endorsement with authorization for the early childhood or elementary levels.Continuing Teaching License: Special educators holding Initial Teaching Licenses are required by law to complete TSPC requirements for continuing licensure within six years of being awarded an Initial Teaching License in an approved teacher preparation program. The fulfillment of these requirements leads to recommendation for the Continuing Teaching License.
