Daniel is director of the Family and Human Services Program in the College of Education at the University of Oregon. His education includes a B.A. from California Lutheran College, an M.A. from Idaho State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.

Daniel is married to Valerie Taylor Close who is co-director of the EC-CARES Early Childhood Education Program at the the University of Oregon. Their daughter Liesl works in Portland, and their son Brett is a student at Pomono College in California.
