Ellen Hawley McWhirter's empirical scholarship focuses on the career development of ethnic minority and female high school students, with a particular focus on perceived barriers and environmental supports and their influences on self efficacy and outcome expectations, as well as educational and career aspirations and plans. A second area of scholarly focus has been the development of an empowerment model of counseling, and this line of scholarship has resulted in a book and a series of articles. In 2008 she received the John Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Career or Personality Research from the Society for Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association.
