No departmental application forms are required, but please contact the Communication Disorders and Sciences postbaccalaureate advisor, Kathy Roberts, to review transcripts and plan a course of study before registration. Program Description
Postbaccalaureate status allows a student to begin coursework in the program without the extensive admissions procedure required for graduate school. The advantage of this status is that students are eligible to enter the program and complete many of the prerequisites necessary for graduate school and certification, regardless of prior undergraduate degree. Completion of CDS prerequisites prepares a student for a speech pathology master's program and generally makes a student more appealing to graduate program admissions committees across the country. Many graduate programs require a 3.0 GPA for admission. Please check graduate school websites for specific school requirements. Most students complete postbaccalaureate courses in three terms as a full-time student. Depending on previous coursework, students may need to take coursework outside the CDS major to complete the prerequisites. It is advised that students meet with the postbac advisor as soon as possible to set up an individualized plan of study. One feature of postbaccalaureate status is that there is no guarantee that, upon completion of a year of undergraduate coursework, a student will be admitted to this CDS master's program. However, completion of this program may result in admission to this or some other Communication Disorders and Sciences master's program.
Notes on Licensure and Certification
Every year, a number of students interested in becoming certified speech-language pathologists apply to the CDS postbaccalaureate program as a step towards entry into a master's program. A master's degree is required for licensure as a speech-language pathologist. |
