PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The faculty and staff in the Special Education major at the UO College of Education are committed to making a difference for people with disabilities and their families by increasing their success in schools, workplaces, and community settings.

The master's degree program in special education (SPED) emphasizes knowledge of learners who are identified with learning disabilities, behavior disorders, autism, or severe disabilities. A master's in SPED prepares professionals to work as specialists and consultants in school programs that serve students with diverse learning needs (e.g. behavioral, academic, social). Graduate studies in special education build capacity through personnel preparation, research, outreach, and dissemination. These efforts are focused on systemic approaches to prevent and reduce the incidence and prevalence of disabilities as well as to provide supports for students with disabilities to successfully participate in schools and communities.

Master's Degree
Students pursue the master's degree to enhance their skills as special education teachers or consultants, to work in adult service programs for people with disabilities, or to fulfill a prerequisite for school administration programs or for the doctoral program.

The degree can be earned in approximately five terms and can be combined with a licensure program.

Students may work toward a master of arts, master of science, or master of education degree. For the M.A. degree the candidate must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. For the M.Ed. degree the candidate must have a valid teaching license and have completed at least one year of successful classroom teaching.

Program Prerequisites
Applicants must meet general university requirements for graduate admission including a bachelor's degree and 3.00 grade point average (GPA).
Application, Deadlines, and Admission
Special Education programs admit students in the spring for the following fall term. The initial application deadline is February 15. Applications for any unfilled slots are accepted through April 1. To request an application packet or inquire about application procedures, contact the academic secretary. You may also find the Questions  and Answers sheet helpful.

Students who are interested in more than one major in Special Education should indicate this on admission applications.

Program Description
The master's degree in Special Education requires the completion of 45 credits of graduate work. A minimum of 20 credits make up the required core coursework, including either the 3-credit master's project or the 9-credit thesis. Additional electives, selected in consultation with a faculty adviser, allow the student to focus on an area of interest.

Students can complete the master's degree course of study in four to six consecutive terms. Students take at least one course from each of the following core areas:

• Foundations

• Behavioral Support

• Legal Issues

• Curriculum and Instruction

• Diversity Issues

• Research

• Field Studies

All master's students must complete a capstone project, either a master's project, a master's thesis, or a master's synthesis course. Individual program emphases are developed in cooperation with the student's advisor.

Field Experience
At least three credits are completed either in a field study placement or practicum setting. These may be clinical, educational, or community agency settings, where students demonstrate their ability to interact collaboratively with colleagues, instructors, and staff while working with individuals across varied instructional or human services contexts. Students' instructional and program competence are evaluated by cooperating professionals and university supervisors.
Notes on Licensure and Certification
