Transforming Teaching & Learning
at the College of Education

The concept of new facilities for the UO College of Education sets a new standard for the state of the art in delivery of high quality academic programs, clinical experiences, and research activity.

The college plans to break ground for the project in 2007! For this important part of Campaign Oregon to become a reality, hundreds of COE alumni and friends need to make a significant commitment of support over several years. Right now, however, is a special time in the process of the project. If the college can raise $2.5 million from other donors, Business Wire founder Lorry Lokey will match it—completing the funds needed to break ground. “I hope the challenge will spur other donors to step forward,” says Lokey, who also previously pledged $10 million to the college. “I decided to increase my pledge because the longer it takes to raise the money, the more expensive the project will be.”

Views of the Project: From Needs Assessment to Design
In fall of 2002, the UO Office of University Planning and the College of Education conducted a needs assessment of the college facilities with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership and PAE Consulting. The report of the assessment resulted in the devlopment of a conceptual plan for new facilities, available in an Acrobat PDF:

Project Architects Selected
With the selection of Thomas Hacker Architects Inc. of Portland to design the new facilities and renovations for the college, the building project moved into the programming and conceptual design phase. In April 2006, the project architects began gathering vital input to establish criteria for facilities that will accurately represent and serve the many programs and services of the college.

In the design phase, floorplans and drawings have been developed according to program criteria—and modified frequently to reflect input from COE faculty, staff, and students (updated items will be posted as they are received). Construction—which will include remodeling of existing buildings and construction of the new HEDCO Education Building—is scheduled to begin in December 2007.
